We all live in our own era and in our own head; but, not all the time.

It is my intent as an author to allow myself and my readers to visit the late 17th Century without feeling we are in a world that’s unknown or unknowable. I feel at home in the Thief Taker Tales I hope my readers are also.
As a debut novelist I knew there was a lot to learn before I was ready to release my first book. What I didn't expect was I would write two more novels before the first would be ready to be published. Not only that, I had sketched out the plot and character arc for most of the books in the planned series.Â

I think spending almost 30 years as a professional project manager I am used to planning out a story of change for my clients; taking an idea and plotting a path from concept to reality. As my irrepressible character Edgeworth Bess is fond of saying: 'A failure to plan, is a plan to fail.'

However, when I put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, I just let the people in the Thief Taker Tales, tell me their story.

When I started writing the Thief Taker Tales, I made myself a little post-it note: 'Keep your Word and Keep your Words.' I am doing both.
​
I've written all my life, but, just threw everything away once I was happy with a final draft. It only occurred to me in late 2023 that was a dumb thing to do.

If you write because you enjoy it, I hope you come to the realization sooner than I; that binning or deleting everything, or even anything, you create is not the ideal approach to building your confidence as a writer and especially as a person.Â

When not re-reading The Discworld novels or books with titles like, 1001 more bits of useless trivia, I am always jotting down poems, prose, ditties and doggerel, just for pleasure. Some of those pieces have leaked into the Thief Taker Tales and some are available on this site, just for fun. Enjoy.

Outside of writing, I'm devoted to my family, friends, Twining's Ceylon tea, black & white comedy films, the memory of my beloved Ollie the Pug and shouting loudly at the television whenever Arsenal F.C are playing; even if they are many time-zones ahead and thousands of miles away.

I never let reality get in the way of a good story.
