Isaac drew out of a velvet bag an ebony flute and started to play a memorable tune.
To that tune, he sang:
‘Listen to my tale, of a maid and her failed beau’
‘Fill in the words, to this tune that you’ll soon know’…
‘She was a pretty maid, a Pastor’s daughter’
‘He a rake, drank more than he’ [we all sang] … ‘OUGHT’ ER.’
‘Her gown and petticoats billow in the wind’
‘The beau visited a bawd, and there he often’ …. ‘SINNED.’
‘One night he came a knocking, after the inn was shut’
‘Maid said put your diddler away, I’m not a common’…. ‘SLUT.’
‘Beau said, see how I desire thee, let’s to bed and lay’
‘Maid said, you have no ardour to please me, so put that tiny thing’…. ‘AWAY.’
‘The Watchman came to Maid’s rescue, when Beau tried to scratch his itch’
‘Watchman kicked Beau hard and often, and threw him in a’…. ‘DITCH.’
‘It’s a Watchman for me, Maid said, Everything is mighty, and in its proper place’
‘Now come inside by my fire, and I’ll sit upon your’…. ‘FACE.’
